Shattering Compacted Topsoils
If soils are compacted after placement, they should be shattered. Shattering compacted soils to depths of 2 feet is essential for the healthy growth of most perennial plant species. Without this measure, it can take many decades for deep compaction to recover to densities suitable for optimum plant growth. Deep tillage also reduces runoff, while shallow tillage often has little effect.
- Excavators are preferred over tractors
- If tractors are used, place more than one tine on toolbar
- Use winged tines
- Operate when soils are moderately dry to dry
- Don't drive equipment over shattered soil
