ROADSIDE REVEGETATION—An Integrated Approach to Establishing Native Plants

Case Study Narrative

Introduction

"During the initiation phase of the Sunriver to Bachelor project, we observed that many roadcuts did not have vegetation. We had listed the limiting factors but we needed to narrow into what was the appropriate mitigating measures to apply to the site. We considered the use of hydromulch. But if we use this method, what rates of mulch should we apply to get the best germination and plant establishment? We thought that the more hydromulch the better since this was a sandy soil with a very dry climate. This was a 12 mile road project with over 30 acres that would need to be seeded. For areas that received higher levels of precipitation, we felt that it was too risky to use the same hydroseeding rates, so we had to look for other alternatives. This was a unique site, and we needed to understand how it responded to hydroseeding."
