ROADSIDE REVEGETATION—An Integrated Approach to Establishing Native Plants

CTIP

Introduction

How Does Vegetation Sequester Carbon?

As plants become established on highly disturbed sites, CO2 is captured through photosynthesis and stored in the foliage, branches, and stem of the plant. Carbon is also transported to the soil where it is stored in roots, soil organisms, and organic matter. The deeper and healthier the soil, the more carbon it will store. More carbon stored in plants and soil means less greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
