ROADSIDE REVEGETATION—An Integrated Approach to Establishing Native Plants

CTIP

Introduction

How Does Revegetation Reduce Weeds?

Many weeds outgrow native species on poor soils, but native species typically outgrow weeds on good soils.

Disturbed soils are usually compacted and lack topsoil, nutrients, and organic matter. The plants that typically occupy these areas are often aggressive weeds. Deep-rooted native plants can not compete on these sites. Revegetation treatments that improve the soil conditions along with seed mixes composed of the appropriate species will increase the potential that deep-rooted native species will dominate the site and limit the places where weeds can become established.
